Factors affecting the occupancy of Chinese pangolins ( Manis pentadactyla ) suggest a highly specialized ecological niche

چکیده

The Chinese pangolin is a critically endangered and biologically unique species, yet information on its status, distribution, habitat preferences still scarce in Nepal, which limits effective conservation action. This study identified the current burrow density distribution pattern, important parameters associated with Nepal through opportunistic field surveys. Fifty-four belt transects were examined for presence of burrows. For each active (burrow freshly dug soil, footprints, scat near entrance) old compacted dead leaves, spider web entrance), we recorded geographic coordinates assessed data 11 that included elevation, aspect, slope, canopy cover, ground or absence ant termite colonies, type, soil distances to nearest water source, road, settlement. A total 141 burrows 430 an overall clumped S 2 / = 2.188 $$ \left\{\left({S}^2/a\right)=2.188\right\} . Active was estimated be 1.04 burrows/ha. Of predicted influence probability encountering burrows, all significant except elevation. More than 92% found at elevations between 450 750 m facing either SE NW aspect. Similarly, about 90% distributed areas having slopes 0% 30% moderate high located close sources, roads, settlements. Additionally, they strongly preferred forest habitats (with Shorea robusta, Castanopsis indica, Schima wallichii, Clerodendron infortunatum, Nephrolepis auriculata as dominant vegetation), red colonies. Although area currently provides suitable pangolins, it slowly being degraded due increasing rates degradation. Conservation efforts should increased order protect this species their habitats. Finally, our findings reveal characteristics could instrumental policy makers managers making plans pangolins.

Factors Affecting Vehicle Occupancy Measurement

Factors affecting vehicle occupancy measurement were examined with the aim of improving state vehicle occupancy monitoring programs. A comparison was conducted of five data sets looking at the effects on average vehicle occupancy (AVO) of time of day, day of week, road types, HOV lanes, locational differences, and traffic volume. It was found that AVO was higher in the afternoons, on Saturdays,...

Mycorrhizal hyphae as ecological niche for highly specialized hypersymbionts – or just soil free-riders?

Mycorrhizal fungi interconnect two different kinds of environments, namely the plant roots with the surrounding soil. This widespread coexistence of plants and fungi has important consequences for plant mineral nutrition, water acquisition, carbon allocation, tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses and interplant competition. Yet some current research indicates a number of important roles to b...

A review of some ecological factors affecting the growth of Azolla spp.

The genus Azolla forms a group of small-leafed, floating aquatic ferns native to the tropics, subtropics, and warm temperate regions of Africa, Asia, and America. For several decades, these ferns have been utilized for various purposes: e.g. as green manure, feed for animals, but also for the removal of different metals (e.g. Hg, Pb, Cr and Cd) through wastewater treatment or for elimination of...

Ecological Factors Affecting Community Invasibility

What makes a community invasible? For over a century ecologists have sought to understand the relative importance of biotic and abiotic factors that determine community composition. The fact that we are still exploring this topic today hints at both its importance and complexity. As the impacts from harmful non-native species accumulate, it has become increasingly urgent to find answers to the ...

Learning the ecological niche.

A cornerstone of ecological theory is the ecological niche. Yet little is known about how individuals come to adopt it: whether it is innate or learned. Here, we report a cross-fostering experiment in the wild where we transferred eggs of blue tits, Cyanistes caeruleus, to nests of great tits, Parus major, and vice versa, to quantify the consequences of being reared in a different social contex...
